Academics
Internal and external assessments of entering 6th grade students at Roxbury Prep, the first Uncommon Boston school founded in 1999, indicate that students arrive with poor academic skills – one-third of students typically score at least two years below grade level in reading and math on the Stanford 9 Achievement Test, with some scoring as low as the 2nd grade level.
The performance of urban students has nothing to do with students’ capacity to learn; it depends entirely on the quality of the schools in their communities. The academic progress made by students while at Roxbury Prep proves that the achievement gap can be closed. On the 2010 MCAS exams, 100% of 8th graders passed the Math and ELA exams, scoring Advanced or Proficient at a rate of 82% and 93%, respectively. Roxbury Prep was recognized by Governor Patrick as a Commendation School, citing the school’s impressive student achievement gains. Grove Hall Prep will build upon Roxbury Prep’s best practices in order to ensure similar academic gains among its student body.
